Purpose

The Western Wayne County Quilting Guild is a non-profit organization which promotes an interest in and an appreciation of the art of quilt making. We share information to educate and stimulate high standards of quilt design and technique. We support several area charitable activities such as Habitat for Humanity and Children's Hospital. In addition, quilts are made and donated, through our "We Care" program, to local families in need.

Membership

Membership is open to all interested persons. A Board of Directors manages the business of the organization. Membership dues are $20.00 per year. Junior memberships (under 18) are $10.00 per year. For persons joining the guild after 1st July, dues are half the yearly rate. Dues expire 31st December of each year and are to be paid by Quilt Day in February in order to attend as a member.

Activities

Most Guild activities are held at the Van Buren Senior/Community Center (Otisville Room) 46425 Tyler Road, Belleville, MI 48111

Quilt Day: Quilt Days are held on the second Saturday of the month. Guest speakers address a variety of quilting-related topics including new quilting techniques in hands-on sessions. Guest presenters often bring quilts for us to learn from and admire. Guild members have Show and Tell sessions at each gathering to exhibit finished (or nearly finished) items. There are also many other activities.

Sit and Stitch: The Guild welcomes all to attend the WWCQG Sit & Stitch, held on alternate months to Quilt Day. Our members have also established several smaller Sit & Stitch groups. They meet morning or evening and visitors are always welcome. These groups work on various quilting projects, instruct and assist other quilters and enjoy each others' ideas and creativity.

Retreat: To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the organization of the Guild, a quilting retreat was held in May 2005. The event was such a success that it has now become an annual event.

Raffle Quilt: Each year our Guild makes a raffle quilt to raise money to support our charitable activities. If it's a quilt Show year, we raffle the quilt at the close of the show. If not, the quilt will be raffles at our October Quilt Day.

Challenge Quilt: A Challenge quilt is constructed by individual members. Each year, the theme or color scheme is different. The objective is to dare yourself to do something you would not otherwise attempt, either in block construction or with colors. All quilts will be displayed and critiqued at either the last meeting of the year or The Quilt Show. A "Viewers Choice" is determined by secret ballot. No one is a loser with their quilt because we all share things we learned while completing our Challenges. Quilt Show: Every three years, our Guild hosts a fall Quilt Show. Over 150 quilts both old and new are on display. In addition to the exhibition of quilted items, we have quilting technique demos, a silent auction, quilting vendors and other quilting-related activities.
